I am thankful for life.
Thankful for my body, because it was strong this year. I love its changing shape, the way scars and stretch marks run down it like rain on a windowpane.
I am thankful for my family. If a family cares, consoles, challenges, comforts, teaches, then I have a spectacular one, even if we look ordinary from the outside.
I am thankful for J. If we are a ship, then he is the mast and I the sail, and I know that I am free to follow the wind wherever it might lead me, because my unsteady shape, my billowing, fey nature is grounded onto something tall, and quiet, and steady.
I am thankful for my cats, who would not leave my side when I needed them most. Cats love as people love-rushing forward, retreating, aloof, playful. Perhaps dogs are easier because we mistake their loyalty for true love. Perhaps cats are harder because they remind us of ourselves.
I am thankful for my home in the forest. I have never belonged to a place more completely.
I am thankful for my friends, for reasons that they know. Especially Rachel. For reasons that she knows.
I am thankful that we will make the car ride down to our families tomorrow, passing other cars from which heads covered in all shades of hair will bob around us like flowers in a thousand pots.
Be thankful-life has kissed you for another year. Kiss it back.
